Jorge Lorenzo won his fourth successive victory after leading in Catalunya from start to finish. He held off a late charge from Valentino Rossi to close within just one point off of the Italian. Dani Pedrosa rounded off the podium after a lonely race in third.
Hot conditions led to an early flurry of riders crashing out, with world champion Marc Marquez and Britain’s Cal Crutchlow were among the casualties. Pole man Aleix Espargaro crashed out of fouth position late on whilst Andrea Dovizioso also failed to finish.
Dovizioso’s Ducati team-mate Andrea Iannone came fourth, with Britain’s Bradley Smith rounding off the top five after a solid ride. Fellow Brit Scott Redding recorded his highest premier class finish in seventh.
Lorenzo was the only Spanish victor on the day, with Johann Zarco taking the victory in Moto 2 and Britain’s Danny Kent coming out on top on the last lap of the Moto 3 race.
