Mike Ashley has finally decided to support his manager, with new boss Steve McClaren spending £39m on strengthening the spine of the team. Forward Aleksander Mitrovic, attacking midfielder Georgino Wijnaldum and full back Chancel Mbemba have joined a strong core of players that started so well under Alan Pardew last season. Goals should not be a problem for the Magpies, with Papiss Cisse, Ayoze Perez, Emmanuel Riviere and Mitrovic upfront. Defence will be the key position for Newcastle to strengthen, as the current centre backs offer little inspiration, especially if captain Fabricio Coloccini leaves. McClaren certainly has more of the Alan Pardew rather than John Carver feeling about him, and with his record of doing well at Derby, albeit without bringing any success, should be an exciting prospect for Newcastle fans. McClaren’s Derby team were the fourth highest scorers in last season’s Championship, and also kept the joint highest number of clean sheets, so the Toon Army should witness a dramatic improvement in the quality of football from last season.
Key Player: Georginio Wijnaldum
